See How NO GI Jiu Jitsu Can Boost Your Fitness

Freestyle Dojo, located in the west end of Toronto, specializes in No-gi Jiu Jitsu, as we feel that this is more relevant to the modern era of grappling. In order to take a mixed martial artist to the professional level, it’s imperative to focus on building skill in submission wrestling. Newcomers to Jiu Jitsu will benefit from our coaches commitment to staying relevant in a sport that is constantly evolving.

Jiu Jitsu started in Japan and was later brought to South America by a Japanese judoka named Mitsuyo Maeda who began the style we now call Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Maeda was trained in Judo, which we know as a throwing art today, however it originally contained many techniques to use on a grounded opponent, this was called Ne Waza. After establishing himself in Brazil, the legend goes, he was helped and befriended by the Gracie family. He taught Judo to the sons of the family who were instrumental in developing a more robust catalog of ground techniques that would eventually become Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The Gracie family, among others, proceeded to turn Jiu Jitsu into one of the most effective martial arts the world had ever seen.

While BJJ was developing in Brazil, there were many other forms of grappling all over the world. Russian Sambo, Catch Wrestling, Folkstyle/Freestyle Wrestling, Greco-Roman Wrestling, Judo, Japanese Jujutsu, Senegalese Wrestling, Turkish Oil Wrestling and many many more. Fast forward ~100 years and what we have today is by far the greatest and most effective grappling style in history. Submission Grappling, also known as No-gi Jiu Jitsu, is the evolution of martial arts. We have the privilege of standing on the shoulders of our predecessors and, much like Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do, take the best of what history has to offer so we may achieve new heights.

This is the ethos of Freestyle Dojo, to remove the labels and the dogma of the past, do away with silly dated representations of respect and honor and focus solely on the art of Submission Grappling.

New to Jiu Jitsu? No problem. Our coaches are well suited to running a class that caters to all skill levels. Just let us know your experience when you arrive and let us do the rest. Our adult Jiu Jitsu classes are for all practitioners and consist of drills, live drills, and sparring.

I myself am not a beginner but this gym I can tell is really good for beginners as it resembles the gym I started out in years ago. Casual, laid back training environment with a practical approach to training. Everything they teach here has a logical reason for why it's being taught and a history of practical application in professional matches. If not for conflicts in my schedule I'd make it out more often but I'm excited to see another nogi focused gym open up in Toronto and will be keeping an eye on it as it grows. I don't do kickboxing so I cannot comment on that.

I can't say enough good things about my experience with Freestyle Dojo! (Trained both Jiu Jitsu + Kick Boxing) Every instructor was great at providing instruction/demonstration, very knowledgable & always welcoming! I sometimes struggle to learn in a group setting & can be a bit slow to learn, but felt confident & capable at every class. Overall a great environment to learn! Would highly recommend!

Best martial arts gym in the city full of likeminded individuals focused on learning, helping others, and building a strong community of both beginners and advanced students. Everyone is welcoming and encouraging. Kickboxing and jiujitsu classes are focused on technique and safe training with excellent coaching from Connor, Yazzy, Mike and Jesse. I'm always surprised at how quickly the time goes by during class. I train here 4-5x a week and wish I had more time to train even more.

An amazing martial arts gym in the West End, great for all levels! I personally mostly train kickboxing, but jiu jitsu and wrestling are also included in the membership. You'll get a lot of value for your money because the class schedule is really full and flexible. The instruction is awesome- really technical, fun, and a great workout. I also found from day one that the atmosphere is welcoming and approachable- it feels like a real community. As someone who has trained on and off for a long time and has some fight experience, I also really appreciate that everyone comes to train hard with no ego- there are no gimmicks. If you're looking for a gym where you will learn something, get really great value for your membership and join a really friendly, diverse community, this is the place!

There are so many things to like about Freestyle Dojo. I have been taking kickboxing, jiu jitsu, and fitness classes since they opened this year. All the coaches are patient and have this excellent ability to break down the new skills into separate steps, making it easier to learn new things while better refining movements I already know. The atmosphere is fun and casual, but this is a place that people go to learn. Somehow the gym owner, Mike, manages to be simultaneously sarcastic and welcoming, which means you'll be laughing while you work on improving. Also, this is one of the only martial arts gyms I've been to where the women in the kickboxing classes frequently outnumber the men. It's nice to finally have a variety of partners at a variety of skill levels who are actually my height or weight to train with. If you are looking for a martial arts gym that will be more than just the place you go to work out, check out Freestyle.
